University of Incarnate Word swept Texas A&M International University in a Heartland Conference doubleheader action on Saturday afternoon in Laredo at Gateway Softball Field. The Cardinals clinched the doubleheader against the Dustdevils 2-0. UIW cruised by TAMIU winning the opening game 9-0 and game two 9-0. TAMIU connected only two hits on 17 at bats with a single hit from Victoria Beltrán and Janelle Ruiz. UIW had a successful batting performance in the opener with 10 hits. The Cardinals scored nine runs ending the game in the sixth inning with only one error. Victoria Beltrán (7-7) received the loss. She allowed nine earned runs on 10 hits in a five inning outing. UIW (20-18, 11-5 Heartland) jumped out to a quick start again in game two of the doubleheader against TAMIU (12-22, 8-6 Heartland) on Saturday. The Cardinals continued their hitting streak connecting on 12 hits on 25 at bats. UIW scored nine runs while the Dustdevils only delivered three hits scoring one run. Victoria Beltrán scored the only unearned run for the Dustdevils. Courtney Smith (1-8) was tagged with the loss. She pitched five innings allowing 9 earned runs. Texas A&M International University returns to action against the University of Incarnate Word for a doubleheader on Sunday. Play will start at 12 noon in Laredo at Gateway Softball Field. |
