Stephon Leary

Stephon Leary was introduced as the third men's basketball head coach in Texas A&M International University history last June.

The Houston native returns to Texas to guide the Dustdevils through the NCAA Division II provisional process backed by a solid resume that includes stints as a high school coach, NCAA Division I assistant and NCAA Division II head coach. Leary's combined record as a high school and college head coach is 355-191.

Prior to arriving at TAMIU, Leary was head coach at Palm Beach Atlantic for two seasons. Like TAMIU, Palm Beach Atlantic is making the transition to the NCAA Division II ranks. He guided the Sailfish to an 11-52 record playing one of the nation's toughest schedules with a squad of underclassmen.

Before taking the reigns as a head coach Leary was an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at Liberty University for three seasons. He was responsible for recruiting efforts that landed two top 60 recruiting classes and one top 50 recruiting class. The Flames compiled an impressive 45-45 record with Leary on board.

The highlight of Leary's tenure at Liberty was the 2003-04 season. The Flames won the Big South Conference regular season title and postseason tournament title before facing St. Joseph's in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.

Prior to entering the collegiate ranks, Leary gained eight years of experience as a high school athletic director and coach at Faith West Academy in Houston. He coached basketball, football, track and field and baseball at the TAPPS school.

Leary led Faith West to a TAPPS 2A girls' basketball state title in 1996 and a 3A state football title in 2000. He was named TAPPS Coach of the Year for the 1996-97 academic year.

Leary earned three letters at point guard during his playing career at Liberty. He graduated with a bachelor's in psychology with a concentration in counseling from Liberty in 1992.

Leary and his wife Lisa have been married for 13 years.
